Each year, more than 200,000 healthy dogs and cats are euthanised in Australia, due to overcrowding in shelters that simply can’t cope with the number of animals being abandoned and surrendered on a daily basis.
It’s a tragic cycle that ex-vet nurse Marisa Debattista and the volunteers at Second Chance Animal Rescue (SCAR) are determined to break. As well as rescuing, fostering and re-homing as many condemned cats and dogs as they can, they run community outreach programs, offering free de-sexing, vet services and pet food to disadvantaged owners in the hope of preventing many animals from being abandoned in the first place.
Daily life at SCAR is rich with big-hearted characters (both animal and human) and full of action. There’s the influx of rescues from the pound runs, the twice-weekly vet clinics, adoptions, foster pick-ups, training sessions, emergencies and visits from the local Mayor. Then there is the all-important fund- and friend-raising activities that keep the organisation running – everything from corporate puppy visits and dog yoga, to kitten fairs, doggy dashes, zoo galas, pet markets and celebrity photo opportunities.
